An Abundance of Knowledge Shared by Artists

Straight Talk on the Biz of Being an Artist, with Shirley Williams

The kind of career Shirley has created for herself is very different from my career as a licensed artist, however, I could relate to a lot she was saying. A glimpse into her career was fascinating and I learned a lot from her. The statement that I related to most was:

“There’s only one thing constant in being a professional artist and that’s CHANGE.”

This, I believe, is true for most artists. Not only do our careers have ups and downs but we also find ourselves on different paths. How we start out selling our art rarely stays the same throughout our career as Shirley talks about in this interview. That’s only one part of it…..what about how our style changes? Our art evolves and changes over time. I think it has to do with us changing as an individual. We are so connected to our art, it is such a part of us. How can we grow, mature and change while our art stay the same? It doesn’t work that way. If we were to look at the art we created in the beginning of our career and then again after 10, 15 or 20 years, it would look quite different. Our style not only changes but I believe as we mature as an artist (and as a person), we gain more confidence in who we are and the same goes for our art.

How to License My Art | Art Licensing with Tara Reed

Ok, peeps….this is the “other side”of being an artist. Tara’s way of creating a life of selling her art is very similar to what I’ve been doing since 1997; via art licensing. This is an amazing interview if you are interested in licensing your. Tara shares many great points about the ins and outs of this fun and exciting way of selling your art.

My favorite statement Tara expressed is:

“You can’t need money for your next cell phone bill and think you’re going to get it with art licensing.”

Oh so true. It takes approximately 1 to 1.5 years (and sometimes more) before you receive royalties from the art you created for a licensee! Keep that in mind when pursuing the avenue of art licensing. Unless you still live at home, have no bills to pay, or you married a sugar daddy (teehee) the avenue of art licensing is something you should strive for “after hours” or “on the side” until you build momentum going.
